One fine morning earlier this year, while staying at a hotel in Tokyo, I met and fell in love with Earl Grey Tea. It wasn’t like I hadn’t had Earl Grey before. But, I guess it was like meeting that chick you have met before and kinda liked… but didn’t go head-over-heels over… only to meet her again and discover something mind-blowing about her!

My tea-drinking experience started back in India, where tea is a staple drink, thanks to the British East India Company. India is also the largest tea drinking nation in the world, although it is no longer the largest producer of teas. Mom has never let us kids drink too much tea, for she feared addiction and perhaps other unknown side effects… but we did get our occasional cup on cold or lucky* days.

So, I fell in love with this Melrose’s Earl Grey. It’s a smooth and refreshing tea with a flavor I would describe as just right – neither too strong nor too mild. Earl Grey teas are known for their refreshing citrus flavor, which comes from bergamot oil. Bergamots are a kind of citrus fruits found in southern Italy. I haven’t been to Italy and I have never had a bergamot. But, tasting a good Earl Grey will definitely make you love the fruit… and perhaps Italy too. The name comes from British prime minister from 1830s, Charles Grey. Earl Grey is a generic name, if haven’t figured out already. Many tea brands sport Earl Greys.

When I landed back in US, I wanted to taste the same exhilaration, that started some of the best mornings I had had in Tokyo. Searches for Melrose’s tea didn’t turn up stores where I could buy one. Perhaps they are available at some brick-and-mortar retail stores in US, but nothing online. I’m going try to use this as an opportunity to familiarize myself with more (perhaps better) brands of Earl Greys out there. Here are some I’m thinking of:

Rishi-Tea – Earl Grey Supreme
Twinings Earl Grey

Turns out the Twinings also has a variant on Earl Grey called Lady Grey. This has the oil from Seville oranges, along with bergamot.

Will be back with an update on how the teas tasted, later.

* Notwithstanding my opinion in childhood years, when I used to think tea is bad for everybody, esp since it causes addiction.
